Filipinos and God

I seldom watch TV, read a newspaper or magazine, or even listen to the radio. But every time I observe the Philippine media, there seems to be one word that is commonly mentioned by these people:

God.

Like other 3rd world countries, the Philippines is viewed as an island resided by poverty, prostitution, crime and abused democracy. No wonder most foreigners are afraid of paying a visit. But no matter how much negativity overflows within the hearts of people towards the Philippines, the locals still manage to bring home peace, harmony and strength. Is it because of self-control, hard-work or mere intelligence? Or could it be faith alone that keeps them fighting? Could it be God?

Among all the religions of the world, Christianity marks number one in this country. People, young and old, guilty or innocent, have never forgotten the value of faith in God. At work, when people achieve promotions, they praise God. When they fail to meet the expectations of their boss, they think it's not yet "God's time". In family, Parents pray for good health, financial prosperity and harmony within the members. In relationships, couples come to church together. In businesses, most of them too, asks help and wisdom from their Creator. Even in game shows, contestants pray to win. During interviews, when celebrities are questioned and they are unsure of their answers, they simply say "Bahala na si God," (Let God do the rest). And have you ever listened to a heart-to-heart talk with Radio love doctors like Joe D' Mango? They also include God in giving advise.

What makes Filipinos so dedicated to God, even if this modern world seems to be cruel and hopeless? What makes them remember God when everything is influenced with modern technology than natural creation, evolved from emotional to logical thinking, superstitious belief to scientific reality?

"If God is real, then why can't he be seen?" some skeptics would ask. "If God is merciful, then why are people suffering even when they don't deserve it?" atheists would question. But the faith still remains in the Filipino blood.

That's why it's faith--because even if it seems so crazy to believe in God, they still fight for their faith. That's because they believe that God is an omnipotent being that even the wisest person in the world could never conceive His wisdom. In fact, the good thing about keeping the faith in God is that, these Filipino believers learn to be humble, hospitable, simple and persevering, even in the hardest situations. There is actually no magic in faith, but the wonderful mystery that keeps these Filipinos alive are the "miracles" and "blessings" that happens to their lives.
