The tragedy of Ondoy: a country's nightmare

September 26, 2009, Saturday. A gloomy morning awakened me, with dark skies that almost matched an approaching night. I was planning to take a jogging along the streets of BF Resort Village when the feeling of fright struck my heart. It seemed dangerous to go outdoors.

I didn't bother turning on the TV, but when I logged in at Facebook, several friends put a link in their profiles, showing various videos of unwanted disaster had taken place-- floods in Makati, San Mateo, and numerous provinces of Luzon. Hundreds of lives suffered greatly, locals lost their homes, and dying people yet counting. I could not believe that that single day had caused such traumatic memories for my countrymen.

I have an office mate who lives in San Mateo, and as stated by some fellows, his village was intruded by strong floods that reached beyond a Filipino's average height. Thank God he is still alive. But I'm afraid it's goodbye for the rest of his family's property.

Thousands of Filipinos grieved for the lost of their friends and relatives during the storm, and some, painstakingly blame the catastrophe. Hey people--don't blame the storm. It's a natural disaster. Just be thankful that at least there are still spared lives (and you are part of the spared ones).

So what is the common cause of this tremendous disaster?

Storms usually form from the Pacific Ocean, followed by strong winds and sudden change of climate. Storms occur to wash away pollution in certain areas. It's both harmful and helpful. Harmful because it takes lives. Helpful because it cleans the environment.

So why did floods take over areas that were untouched for 20 years?

Maybe because pollution has taken over in it first.

Remember that floods occur in places with poor drainage, little greenery, and piles of garbage. I am not surprised why Makati and some areas suddenly experienced an exaggerating flow invasion.

As some would keep on blaming, complaining and cursing, why not consider this a wake up call. It's time to come back to discipline and help save the environment. Quit being a littler bug, stop killing trees and start planting, avoid smoking, and carefully follow environmental tips to help save the planet.

...and please stop jumping for joy when you hear the words "classes suspended". It doesn't save lives.
